Community Partnership Initiative
Staten Island

Staten Island is home to a very welcoming and dedicated community that prides itself on being tightly-knit and family-focused. The Staten Island CPI includes the Staten Island Council on Child Abuse and Neglect, a group of more than 25 service providers, agencies, community groups and community residents, all of whom work together to provide family-centered, community-based services. The CPI coalition is also training community members to attend family conferences to support family members, bridge cultural differences and support parents.

Our goals:

• Connecting Child Care/Head Start to Preventive Services

SICCAN works to assure that parents and children in the Staten Island community receive appropriate preventive and child care services by working with NYC Children’s Services Child Care/Head Start Resources.

• Foster Care Recruitment

SICCAN is determined to recruit foster parents for children in need of care in Staten Island. This will give these children an opportunity to be placed with a family in their community, and will also allow parents to stay engaged in the community and take advantage of resources that are available.

• Family Conferences

Family conferences can be difficult, and SICCAN strives to make these meetings more comfortable for families. Trained community members are invited to the conferences, to support family members and help them to understand the issues. There is also an additional focus on bridging cultural differences in the community. Individuals from immigrant populations and other special interest groups will be recruited and provided a stipend to help advocate for families.

• Visitation

In order to improve the overall quality of family visits for parents and children, SICCAN works with the NYC Children’s Services Family Visiting support team to make sure that parents and children in the Staten Island community engage in appropriate and adequate family visiting within their own community.
