Young Adult Internship Program Upcoming Open Houses and Testing Dates

July 01, 2011
The Young Adult Internship Program (YAIP) is targeted to youth between the ages of 16-24 who are both out-of-school and out-of-work with at least a 6th grade reading level. Youth who are chosen to participate from a rigorous selection process will be placed in a 14-week internship that consists of 3 weeks of orientation and training to prepare them for the internship and 11 weeks of an internship consisting of 4 days of work and one day of educational training. Youth will be paid $7.25/hr for 25 hours of week during this 14 week period. Internships are offered in companies ranging from retail, finance, law, manufacturing, healthcare, education and social services to name a few. There will be 3 cohorts of 30 students each (90 per year) whom we will be selecting to participate in this program over the next twelve months. The first cohort will begin their internship in August 2011, the second in December 2011 and the third in March 2012. We are currently conducting outreach to invite students to our upcoming open houses to learn more about the program and to register for the first cohort. We would appreciate if you could provide continuous referrals to us for qualified youth throughout this next calendar year.

While there are no income requirements to participate in this program, Catholic Charities is targeting the following groups of youth:  Generally Disconnected, Disabled Youth (e.g., mental house couseling, substance abuse addiction, asthma, learning disabilities, etc.), Youth with experience in Foster Care, Court-Involved Youth, Runaway and Homeless Youth, Runaway and Homeless Youth who are also LGBTQ.
In addition, 80% of the youth we select must come from the following community districts:
Astoria/LIC, Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, Corona, Ridgewood, Richmond Hill, Jamaica
The other 20% of youth we select may reside anywhere in New York City.
If you would like more information and/or think that your staff would benefit from an in person presentation about this program, please feel free to contact me.  We would be happy to mail you color copies of the youth flyer as well.
