Invitation to Youth Jamboree on May 15, 2011

April 25, 2011
Don’t miss the next New York Road Runners Youth Jamboree — it’s almost here! We invite your kids to join us for a fun day of running, jumping, and throwing at one of the world’s great track and field venues – plus, it’s FREE! Sunday, May 15, 7:45 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.Icahn Stadium, Randall’s Island (Take 4, 5, or 6 train to 125th Street, transfer on the NW corner of 125th Street and Lexington Avenue for the M35 bus to Randall’s and Wards Island) Our Youth Jamboree in March saw almost 3,000 kids sprint, long jump, throw the shot put, and run relays, cheered on by more than 2,000 coaches and parents! We’re looking for even more kids and adults to join us on May 15. And please note, Jamboree events are low-competition and beginners aren’t just welcome, they’re encouraged: the spirit of the Jamboree is all about having fun! There is no cost of admission to the Jamboree for children or adults. Every child who participates will receive a Youth Jamboree t-shirt, event ribbons, and a healthy feeling of accomplishment. Boys and girls 5-10 years old will compete in the morning and events for youth 11-15 years old will take place in the afternoon. There will be a 55-meter race for 4-year-olds at 12:30 p.m.

As a special feature, the top eight girls and top eight boys in the 7 to 8-year-old 100-meter dash will qualify to participate in the “Fastest Kid Race,” to be held on June 11 at the Adidas Grand Prix at Icahn Stadium. The Fastest Kid Race trials are set for 11:00 a.m. and are open to all youth who will be 7 or 8 years old as of June 11, 2011 (proof of birth date is required to participate in the finals).

New York Road Runners (NYRR) is the foremost running organization in the world. Its premier event is the ING New York City Marathon. NYRR fulfills its youth services mission by establishing running-based programs that promote children’s physical fitness, character development, and personal achievement in under-served communities throughout NYC and the U.S.

Randall’s Island Sports Foundation (RISF) was founded in 1992 as a public-private partnership to work on behalf of Randall’s Island Park, located in the East River between East Harlem, the South Bronx and Astoria, Queens. The Foundation, in conjunction with City leadership, works to realize the Island’s unique potential by developing sports and recreational facilities, restoring its vast natural environment, reclaiming and maintaining parkland, and sponsoring community-linked programs for the children of New York City.
