Exciting Youth Leadership Opportunity—Peer Advocacy Program Seeking Applicants

May 19, 2011
Dear Colleague, I am emailing to ask for your help getting the word out about a great leadership development opportunity for youth! The Resilience Advocacy Project is recruiting young people to participate in the Youth Leadership, Empowerment and Advocacy Program (Youth LEAP) -- an exciting after school program that trains teens to become peer advocates for other youth in communities throughout New York City. We are recruiting young people, ages 16-19, who want to have an impact in their communities and who can commit to an exciting and demanding after-school program for nine months. Peer advocates will meet bi-weekly to explore their communities, learn about young people’s legal rights, and develop the skills to become effective advocates for themselves and other youth. Beginning in January, youth will work together to train other youth about how to use the law to stick up for their rights, to use video and online media to advocate for other youth, and to work with local law students to help run youth advocacy clinics in their communities that help young people overcome challenges in their lives. The Youth LEAP program empowers youth to impact the circumstances of their lives and their communities. Young people develop their research, planning, communication, and leadership skills by engaging in real advocacy work that impacts real lives. Participation may also fulfill service learning requirements. Please circulate the attached application to any young people and colleagues that you think may be interested. Youth can also apply online at: http://tinyurl.com/3uw8b6w For more information about the program, or to receive a hard copy of the application materials, please contact Cait Gillies at 212-204-6666, or by email at (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) .

We would also welcome the opportunity to give a short presentation about the program at your school or organization. Please contact our office if you would like to schedule a presentation.

Thank you for your help in sharing this information with young people!

Sincerely,
Brooke Richie
