Youth Leadership, Empowerment and Advocacy Program (Youth LEAP) -- an exciting after school program that engages youth as peer advocates for other young people in communities throughout New York City. We bring together a group of 15-20 teens from all over the City to serve as leaders in their communities by educating other youth about their legal rights and by giving them the information and support to protect those rights.
We are recruiting young people, ages 16-19, who want to have an impact in their communities and who can commit to an exciting and demanding after-school program for nine months. Peer advocates will meet bi-weekly to explore their communities, learn about young people’s legal rights, and develop the skills to become effective advocates for themselves and other youth. Beginning in January, peer advocates will work with local law students and social work students to help run a network of neighborhood-based youth advocacy clinics that help young people overcome challenges in their lives.
The Youth LEAP program empowers youth to impact the circumstances of their lives and their communities. Young people develop their research, planning, communication, and leadership skills by engaging in real advocacy work that impacts real lives. Participation may also fulfill service learning requirements.
Please circulate the attached flier and application to any young people and colleagues that you think may be interested.
