Circle of Support Family Cook Productions

April 27, 2010
Family Cook Productions did a cooking demo to show how cooking can be a regular family activity. Lynn Fredericks from Family Cook Productions invited two of her teens from her Teen Iron Chef program to help out with the demo. Participants of the meeting helped with the preparation of the food, which was a fresh salsa dip made of tomatoes, mangos, black beans, corn, cilantro, and a hint of pepper to add some spiciness to the dish; needless to say, it was very delicious. Participants were very impressed by the maturity of the two Teen Iron Chefs. One of them is actually in foster care herself, and she was very excited about being part of this workshop. This created a dialogue of how foster families can get involved in different cooking workshops, particularly for teens in foster care. A copy of Lynn Frederick's book, Cooking Time is Family Time, was also raffled off to a lucky participant. Foster parents who attended this meeting also learned about the Stanton Street CSA and what Community-Supported Agriculture (CSA) is; this is a great opportunity for families to get fresh and locally grown organic produce for very little, depending on income requirements. This is a very useful resource for many of our foster families.

About CPI Image

To continue with the theme of nutrition and healthy cooking, Jannie Wolff from Cornell University Cooperative Extension Health and Nutrition Program , “Making the Most of Food”, will be present at next month’s Circle of Support meeting, which is scheduled for Monday, May 10, from 6 to 8pm.  She will be presenting an interactive learning station on the impact of sugar in drinks, which can open a dialogue about reading labels and making healthier choices in our foods and beverages.
We plan to make this a joint foster parent support group meeting and foster parent recruitment event.  Foster parents who attend are encouraged to invite a family member or friend to the meeting, since the best referrals for prospective foster parents are often from other foster parents.

Special thanks to University Settlement’s Older Adults program, who lends the space to the Lower East Side CPP every month for these Circle of Support meetings.
