ATL Internship Overview 2010 (3) for Brooklyn Young Mothers

Who We Are The Brooklyn Young Mothers’ Collective (BYMC) provides disadvantaged young mothers with the vision to plan and the tools to build their futures. We encourage our members to actively engage in improving their lives. BYMC provides after-school programs, education support and advocacy as well as legal information services for mothers between the ages of 12 – 21 years old. The Internship The Advocacy & Thought Leadership Program (ATL) trains motivated young mothers to become peer educators and active community members. Participants learn about different government systems which impact the lives of disadvantaged young mothers in New York City. The program also looks at the involvement of women of color in social justice movements within the United States. Additionally, interns inform and participate in BYMC’s advocacy and organizing campaign. This year ATL will focus examining public policies and services for pregnant and mothering students. Interns will meet once a week for two hours from February 2009 to June 2009. They will also attend at least one community event per month and plan a year-end project for June. Interns are expected to commit up to 10 hours per week. School credit may be given for participation.

Responsibilities - Represent BYMC at community events, Coordinate focus groups, Conduct research, Support campaign work

Eligibility, ATL candidates must: Be a young mother between the ages of 12 – 21 years old, Currently attending school, a YABC or GED preparation program, Be dedicated to improving the lives of young mothers in New York City, Be highly motivated, responsible, and a self-starter

All applicants will be asked to: Submit a completed application, Conduct an intake with our Resource Specialist, Complete a final interview with our Community Organizer

Application Materials - Personal Statement: Tell us something about yourself.  What is most important to you when you meet new people or have new experiences. Describe a time when you have had to be a leader.  How would you or your friends describe you?  Also include your name, email and phone number.

Reference Letters: Please provide two reference letters. These letters should come from a teacher and a community member who know you well. Your letters should describe you as a student, leader and community member. Your reference letter should also suggest how you might contribute to our group experience.

Interview: We will schedule an interview with all young women who submit a completed application.

Application Timeline/Deadline Description - December 23, 2009, Your personal statement and two letters of reference.

January 8, 2010, You will be notified of your interview, January 28, 2010, you will be notified of your acceptance to the program.
